Waste Heat Recovery

The largest untapped energy in most plants is in streams nobody wants to touch: warm effluent, dirty process water, condensate contaminated with product. Those streams need an exchanger that does not block.

Waste Heat Recovery

Recovering From Streams Nobody Else Will

Waste heat recovery projects tend to be limited not by the amount of heat available but by whether an exchanger can survive in the stream carrying it. Clean warm streams have usually been recovered already; the dirty ones have not.

Free-Flow and bank assemblies. A Free-Flow plate passes particles up to around 3/8 inch and handles fibrous material. A Temp-Plate bank handles heavier solids still, with removable plates for cleaning. Between them they cover most streams a conventional exchanger would reject.

Interchange against make-up. The classic project is warm effluent against incoming cold make-up water. Both flows already exist, both are continuous, and the exchanger sits between them doing nothing but saving money.

Fouling is expected, not a surprise. Design for cleaning frequency from the start. An exchanger that recovers plenty of heat and cannot be cleaned in a shift will be bypassed within a year.

Common FAQs

Usually yes, and it is often the best available project because nobody has done it. A Free-Flow plate handles particles to around 3/8 inch and fibrous material; a Temp-Plate bank handles heavier solids with removable plates.

Warm effluent interchanged against incoming cold make-up water. Both streams already exist and run continuously, and the exchanger simply sits between them, which makes the economics unusually clean.

Duty recovered times the hours the two streams actually coincide, against the cost of the energy displaced. The coincident hours are the number most often assumed rather than measured, and they usually decide the project.

More often than a clean-duty unit, and that has to be planned rather than resented. Specify a frame that opens easily with access around it, and cleaning becomes routine instead of a shutdown.
