Pulp and paper duty covers digester heating, black and white liquor service, caustic coolers, blowdown liquor cooling and boiler heat recovery. Almost all of it is fouling, alkaline or both.
Free-Flow is the workhorse. Liquors and white water carry fibre, and a conventional plate pack blocks. The open channel of the Free-Flow plate is what makes these streams workable at all.
Heat recovery. White water and effluent interchanged against incoming fresh water is one of the shortest-payback projects available in a mill, precisely because the stream is dirty enough that nobody has done it.
Materials. Alkaline chemistry at temperature and chloride carryover both influence alloy selection, and cleaning access matters as much as material choice.
A conventional plate will block on fibre. The Free-Flow plate has a much more open channel and is designed for exactly these streams, which is why it dominates mill applications.
Frequently it is the best project available, precisely because the stream is dirty enough that nobody has attempted it. Free-Flow plates and bank assemblies both make it workable.
More often than clean duty, and that should be designed for rather than resented. Specify a frame that opens easily with room around it, and keep a spare gasket set on site.
