Refrigeration

Industrial refrigeration uses heat exchangers as evaporators, condensers and secondary loop interfaces. The refrigerant side determines the construction: semi-welded cassettes for ammonia at scale, nickel brazed for smaller ammonia duties, and conventional gasketed or copper brazed units for halocarbon systems. The secondary side is usually where the fouling is, and keeping that side serviceable is what a semi-welded pack is for.

  • Semi-welded for ammonia. Welded cassettes contain the refrigerant while the water or glycol side stays gasketed and serviceable.
  • Nickel brazed alternative. Compact sealed units for smaller ammonia duties where a frame is not warranted.
  • Secondary loops. Glycol and brine interfaces between the refrigeration plant and the process it serves.
  • Falling film chilling. Where the process needs near-freezing water rather than a glycol loop, a falling film chiller makes it directly.
  • Serviceable water side. The side that fouls is the side you can open, which is the practical argument for semi-welded over fully welded.
  • Cold storage. Air unit and glycol loop duty in distribution and storage facilities.

Which Construction for Which Refrigerant

Ammonia rules out copper, so copper brazed units are not an option and gasket compatibility is poor. Semi-welded at scale, nickel brazed for smaller duties.

Halocarbon systems are far less restrictive, and conventional gasketed or copper brazed units both work. The decision there comes down to fouling and whether the unit needs opening.
