Industrial & Process

Industrial duty is where the range gets used most broadly. Aggressive chemistry, high temperatures, solids-bearing streams and tanks that need jacketing all show up in the same plant, sometimes in the same building.

Industrial & Process

Across chemical processing, metal finishing, pulp and paper, power generation and petroleum, the same handful of questions recur. What is attacking the metal, what is fouling the surface, can the stream be pumped through an exchanger at all, and how much pressure drop is there to spend. The answers point at a plate pack, a semi-welded unit, a Free-Flow plate or a Temp-Plate assembly, and we would rather work through them with you than sell whichever we happen to stock.

  • Alloy range. 304 and 316 stainless as standard, with titanium, Hastelloy and Incoloy where the chemistry attacks stainless.
  • Solids and fibres. The Free-Flow plate passes particulates to around 3/8 inch, and Temp-Plate banks handle heavier solids still.
  • Tank and vessel work. Immersion and clamp-on Temp-Plate assemblies put heat transfer into plating tanks, reactors and storage vessels.
  • Semi-welded for refrigerant. Welded cassettes keep aggressive refrigerants off the gaskets while the water side stays serviceable.
  • Cooling tower isolation. The most common industrial duty of all, and the one where a close approach is worth real money.
  • Openable frames. On fouling duty the ability to open the pack and clean the plates is what determines service life.

Fouling Decides Most Industrial Selections

Industrial streams foul, and the equipment that survives is the equipment you can clean. A gasketed frame that opens is worth substantially more over a decade than a sealed unit that is cheaper on day one.

Where the stream carries solids a conventional plate cannot pass, the choice is the Free-Flow plate or a Temp-Plate bank. Both are designed around the assumption that the fluid is difficult.

Chemistry Decides the Rest

Alloy selection follows what concentrates at the surface rather than what is in the bulk. Chlorides at temperature limit stainless; acids point at specific alloys; and the cleaning chemistry is frequently more aggressive than the process.

Send the stream composition including trace species and the cleaning regime, and the material recommendation follows from both.
